Mahindra Scorpio N Z8

The Scorpio N is Mahindra's complete reset of the Scorpio formula — newer platform, properly modern cabin, and an engine that's noticeably quicker than the Classic. Our Z8 trim is the well-equipped one: dual-zone climate, electrically-adjustable driver's seat, 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and CarPlay, and a 360° camera that makes parking the 4.6m-long body in old-city Jodhpur lanes much less stressful.

On the highway it feels closer to a premium SUV than its predecessor. The 2.2-litre diesel does 0–100 in under 11 seconds, which is more relevant than it sounds — overtaking trucks on NH-62 to Jaisalmer no longer requires planning ahead, and the cruise control + lane-watch features mean a four-hour run leaves you less tired. Ride quality is the standout: the new five-link rear suspension soaks up Rajasthan's broken-edge tarmac in a way the old Scorpio never could.

Practically, it's still the seven-seater that fits everyone. The middle row slides and reclines, the third row is genuinely usable for adults on hops up to two hours, and with the third row folded you have nearly 700 litres of boot space — enough for a family of five's week-long packing without compromise. AC is strong from the moment you start the car, with rear vents in all three rows.

We hand the Scorpio N over freshly washed and serviced. The Z8 trim's lighter clutch makes it more friendly to drivers stepping up from a sedan, and the higher seating position with the 360° camera makes it less intimidating than the spec sheet suggests.
