About the Mahindra Thar 4×4 Black
The black 4×4 Thar is the one renters book when they want the car to look as serious as the trip. Murdered-out matte-effect black paint on the bonnet, body, and roof, alloys to match, and the full mechanical kit underneath — high and low range, mechanically-locking rear diff, hill descent control. Where our white Thar is the photogenic choice, this is the one you take when you actually plan to leave the highway.
The 2.2-litre diesel makes a properly muscular 300 Nm of torque, all of it usable from 1,500 rpm. That means you can drop into 4L, idle up a 25-degree gradient, and let the truck do the work — no revving, no clutch slipping. On tarmac it cruises happily at 110 km/h and the upgraded suspension is genuinely composed at speed, not just bouncy and tall like the previous generation. Highway mileage holds at around 12 km/L if you don't push it.
Cabin gets the full Thar treatment: 9-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cruise control, dual airbags front, ABS with EBD, ESP, hill-hold and hill-descent. Seats are properly padded — adults are fine on long runs in the front, kids or smaller adults in the back. Climate AC handles the Jodhpur heat from the moment you crank it.
We service this car after every long trip, and check the 4×4 systems on every handover — both diff lock and low range engaged before we hand you the keys. Tyres are the off-road-rated all-terrains, not the cheap road-bias ones some Thars come with. If you want to actually use the 4×4, this is the car for that.
